Two weeks into the new year, I wonder how everyone is faring with their litany of resolutions. Personally, I chose not to make any this year – even though this could be one of the critical intervals of my life.

I’m not bad-talking resolutions. Instead, I believe a man can put himself in the optimal position to succeed by adhering to the right principles over the long term. Of course, there has to be a starting place for everyone. Here are a few of the basics: ground level stuff every guy has to get a hold of if he wants to have any real success in life – including his dating life.

1. Grow a pair and man-up. We all have problems large and small. Manning-up is about taking responsibility for them. Stop blaming others for your baggage, your hang-ups and your fuck-ups. Yes, it takes a big pair for a guy to say, “It’s my fault and I am going to address the issues that hold me down.”

2. Embrace the grind. Real change does not happen overnight. I have a good friend who has lost a lot of weight and it has taken time and gallons of sweat to accomplish his remarkable achievement. Hard work pays off – period.

3. Stop being or aspiring to be a player. It is this simple: a man who has to lie to women to get in their pants is a pitiful, pathetic loser. Conversely, the men who are willing to follow the suggestions they see on this website will get all the action they desire with the added bonus of a clear conscience.

4. If you have minor children, take care of them. Men who do not pay their child support or lie about their finances in order to pay less are LOSERS.

However, merely cutting a check is not enough. Be there for them. Go to their school and sporting events. Teach them real values about life. Meet their teachers and help them succeed. They don’t need you to be their buddy; they need a FATHER.

5. Get rid of the things you do not need, like debt, unwanted pounds, and a me-first mentality. Learn to give more than you take.

6. Initiate risk. It will open up your world to possibilities you never before dreamed of. And if you fail? So what? get back up and try again.

Listen very closely to this next statement. I’ve said it before but it bears repeating:

If more men became their own harshest critic, there would be far fewer who were their own worst enemy.

Don’t be afraid to assess yourself critically, even brutally. Who knows? It could be the start of something great for you this year.
